Digital Camera Basics

RECOMMENDED BOOKS

For a great series of up-to-date books on both digital photography and specific digital cameras, no one does it better than Dennis Curtin. Click here to see a listing of his latest books.

Digital Photography For Dummies by Julie Adair King. (Dummies Press, Division of IDG Books, ISBN 0-7645-0294-8, $24.99.) The perfect primer for learning about digital cameras and then how to edit your images. Goes into details of shooting, editing, printing, and includes several image editing programs on a cross-platform CD-ROM. This is a "must have" book if you're new (or even not-so-new) to digital photography.

Essentials of Digital Photography by Akira Kasai, Russell Sparkman, and Elizabeth Hurley (translator). (New Riders, ISBN 1-56205-762-6, $60.00.) This intermediate to advanced book covers digital photographic theory and practice, along with some Photoshop techniques. Outstanding! The bundled CD-ROM is a gem and includes a cross-platform tutorial, monitor calibration utilities, and other great goodies.

Digital Camera Companion by Ben Sawyer & Ron Pronk. (Coriolis, ISBN 1-57610097-9, $30.00.) This book contains a potpourri of great stuff at a beginner-to-intermediate level, but has a Windows-only CD-ROM.

The Photographer's Digital Studio by Joe Farace. (Peachpit Press, ISBN 0201-88400-3, $25.00.) Joe Farace is an experienced photographer who's "been there and done that." This book, though a bit dated, is a fine overview for the beginning or intermediate user showing what you can do with those digital pictures after you've shot them.

OTHER DIGITAL CAMERA AND IMAGING WEB SITES

The Web offers a number of resources for immersing yourself further into the world of digital imaging and photography. PC-Photo Forum is an ambitious and well designed site with detailed digital camera comparisons, reviews, and a search engine to find the best camera prices. Both the Digital Camera Resource Page and the Imaging-Resource pages go into great detail on digital camera industry news, specific cameras, technical glitches and fixes, reviews, forums, and other good stuff. Other good sites are Steve's Digicams (non-commercial), Image Acquire, and a site devoted solely to Olympus D500L and D600L cameras.

There's also a newsgroup devoted to digital cameras at "rec.photo.digital" in which information, questions, and answers are posted regularly. And there are other magazine sites which cover digital photography and imaging such as Digital Camera Magazine, Photo District News, and Photo Electronic Imaging.
